I have always been fascinated by the CSI franchise; how the innovative series that approached crime solving from the point of view of the crime scene scientists...the original CSI set in Las Vegas become a platform which expanded into CSI-Miami and New York, The producers have tried different approaches within each series, making the plot-lines a little lighter, a little darker. It seems that making CSI-NY darker did not work but allowing CSI itself to darken was ok. So each show is building its own distinctive character.
CSI reminded me of QSI a mantra I adopted when faced with a job challenge and asking for job objectives got the reply " your the expert! You tell me what your job objectives are!"
After a few days thought and discussion I chose QSI as the bedrock of how I would communicate and lead my team.
QUALITY: we will aim to deliver the highest possible quality of output (the product) and of the service provided. This means discovering, evaluating, adopting and exploiting the best tools available. Exploiting the best tools means having the best quality staff who can play and learn how to exploit the technology to maximise the service and output quality.
SPEED: We will devise ways of delivering speedy solutions; not fast but speedy. By Speed we meant fast turnaround time (which led to the M>W>D approach talked about in an earlier post); presenting the fruits of our efforts in the right form, for the right person, at the right time, (making ideas tangible) enabling rapid decision-making and therefore rapid progress. Speed also means providing the right stimulus for dialogue to speed up understanding of the topic under discussion.
INNOVATIVENESS: Being highly creative on everything that happen to create the solutions That includes working with others, cross-functionally (including those outside the company), cross-disciplinary, finding ways of collaborating to co-create an energising vision that enables the discovery of more powerful concepts and technologies for the 'WHAT' and the 'HOW'. Simulation and visualisation technologies can be transformative in how people take on board new approaches.
Together QSI thinking can be the driver of Restless Creativity, Rigour of Thinking and Collaborative Pioneering that can transform ways of doing business.
